The Scream for String Ensemble by Daniel Strebulaev
Program Notes
“I was walking along a path with two friends – the sun was setting –suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of re above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an in nite scream passing through nature.”― Edvard Munch
Art history has always been important to me. Of all the paintings I have seen and studied, one has always perplexed me more than an other: Edvard Munch’s 1893 painting Der Schrei der Natur, better known as The Scream. After much re ection, I challenged myself to write a piece for string orchestra that would convey the essence of Munch’s work as I see it. Just as the painter created many versions of the work, I rework and transform musical ideas throughout my piece.
My aim is to evoke the feelings of extreme existential dread, profound uncertainty , and the anguish and alienation that, to me, Munch sought to convey.
